Hammocks can add to the fun and relaxation you enjoy during a camping trip. I reviewed a lot of hammocks and this list is what I consider to be the best hammocks for sleeping outside when backpacking. No need to worry about rocks under your bed or puddles coming through your tent when using one of these hammocks.
In this review, I looked made sure each hammock listed was light weight and easy to assemble. Some come in different sizes, so even tall people can find the perfect fit.
This hammock is both economical and full of features. It is good for anyone up to 6 ft tall and 250 lbs. It is 100" by 48" and packs to 7" by 10" and only weighs 2 lbs and 12 oz. It includes "snakeskins", which is a nylon tube to put the unassembled hammock in for transport. The rainfly is 30% larger than previous Hennessy models for better protection from sideways wind and rain. It has a full velcro entrance seal, mesh pocket on ridgeline, webbing straps to protect the bark of trees , 210 D nylon oxford bottom, and 1.9 oz. PU coated rip-stop canopy.
The beauty of this hammock is the extra length. All Hennessy hammocks are quality constructed, but this one is comfortable for anyone up to 7 feet tall and 300 pounds. The packed weight is 3 lb 9 oz and the packed size: 5" x 8" x 12". Once again the hammock fabric is 210D Oxford nylon and the rainfly is a parallelogram with the short side 70", long side 110", short diagonal 128", long diagonal 140". It will keep you dry like the Hennessy Expedition, but is for taller people. It is also available in bottom entry with velcro closure or side entry with a zipper.
The Jungle Safari Zip is designed for the most protection from bugs. The Jungle Safari Zip also has a 100% mosquito-proof double bottom with two layers of tightly woven 40D nylon. It is designed to be used with the Radiant Heat Reflecting DoubleBubble Pad which attaches to "o" rings between the two fabric layers to hold the pad on the correct diagonal, eliminating any movement of the pad. Bottom Fabric Dimensions: 144" x 59" for people up to 7 feet tall and up to 350 pounds. The mosquito mesh is 30D No-See-Um netting. The ropes are 10' long, 2700 lb. test polyester covered polyester ropes. It has an asymmetrical side entry.
I couldn't complete a list of the best hammocks for sleeping outside when backpacking without listing at least one 2 person hammock. The Clark Vertex is unique because it sleeps two people comfortably because of the flexible poles and independent suspension of two beds in one enclosure. The fully zippered no-see-um netting allows for easy entry and exit on both sides. The breathable fabric zips over netting for warmth, privacy and extra protection. This backpacking hammock's packing weight is 5 lbs 1 oz. and includes the hammock, ropes, poles and stuff sack. This does not include a rain tarp. The rain tarp (Vertex size) can be purchased separately on Amazon and weighs about 16 oz including tie out cords. The maximum weight limit is 700 pounds.
If you are looking for a cheap hammock for beach, backyard, college, or camping, if you don't care about a rainfly or mosquito net, this is a great hammock for sleeping outdoors. It is large enough for two and will hold up to 1,000 pounds - which is more than any hammock I reviewed. It is a full 10 feet by 7 feet and weighs only 1 pound. You might want to purchase longer straps, but it's still a low cost hammock.
